A personal look at some lessons learned
I decided to bring back an old post from 8 years ago, in order to share with many of you who are in a new audience with me. Have you ever had a "pity party" for yourself?

I remember a pity party that I had when I was 15 years old. I had been through 3 corrective surgeries for post-polio problems with my feet, and had just learned that we would not be returning to the country of my love - i.e. - the Philippines (where I had lived with my missionary parents for 8-1/2 years). God challenged me with these words from I. Thessalonians 5:18 - (NLT) - "Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus."
So in obedience to Him, I prayed - "Lord, I sure don't feel like it, but in obedience to You, I am giving thanks to You in this situation; and trusting that it is what You have for me." Throughout my life two verses have meant a lot to me. .... Rom. 8: 28-29 -(NLT) - "And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters."
If I truly believe the truths in those verses, I should be able to thank Him no matter what!) That is when I first remember learning what has become a life-time (not perfectly, though) of thanking God - NO MATTER WHAT! It was a special lesson from a patient Heavenly Father.
Sometimes . . . later, God even shows us some of His reasons. He doesn't have to -- but He may, just because He is a gracious, loving Father. One possible reason for our going through difficult times is shown in the following verses.
2 Corinthians 1:3-7 - "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort." (NIV)
What follows is a free-verse poem that I wrote back when I was in college some 40 years ago (give or take a year)! Still fits!
PLANS
I had my plans worked out so well,
I knew just what to do;
But something happened to those plans
I hadn't planned at all.
Somehow these plans (so wonderful!)
Became completely changed;
And I, so discouraged became--
And fretted, feared, and wept.
But then God showed me something
(Something I really knew,
But HE reminded me of)
And then, how blessed I was!
He told me, "MY way is best.
Such things I have in store for you,
Just trust in ME, believe in ME,
And you'll be glad you did!"
Then I said, "Thy will be done!"
And discouragement turned to blessing;
My fretting into peace;
My fears to trust, my tears to joy--
AND OH - SUCH HAPPINESS!!
For now I'm living day to day
With full assuredness--that HIS plan is at work,
AND HIS WAY IS THE BEST!

I saw the following quote the other day, and it fits here too. Have a wonderful week!

Thanks for sharing.
I'm so glad to let God plan my life, and not have to do it myself. He's a much better planner than I am. Unfortunately, I sometimes complain about his plans instead of being thankful.
IKR (as the FB crowd says it -- which means, "I Know, Right"!)
He definitely knows what He is doing better than we do!
I think we all complain at times, until we remember how much
we truly have for which to be thankful!
Every day is a day of Thanksgiving, regardless of the pain and the suffering. Carolyn, you are such a beautiful lady, inside and out.
Thank you for your kind words. Coming from someone about whom I feel the same, that does mean a lot.
So good, your thoughts about turning things over to God. It's a struggle and our hearts still mourn but we know that He knows and that's what counts!
Love the last poster. I might borrow the words for awhile! Thanks for the encouragement today while the snow is making our paths a little difficult.
I was looking at some of the posters I have downloaded because of how much I like them, and I thought - WOW! That goes along with what my post is about.
Hope you are keeping plenty warm... I know you are keeping busy, because you do that all the time! {{Hugs to you - who knows, maybe someday in person!}}
Also love your poem. So hard yet it brings joy.
Thanks, Miriam. You are right, submission to God does bring joy!
I'm so sorry that your body gives you so much pain but it sounds like it hasn't hurt your heart, soul, or mind.
Love that you can see the good out of what you live through everyday.
Thanks, Jill. I have always felt that physical pain must be the easiest to handle. I know many who have emotional pain, and I think that has to be the most difficult pain to deal with of all. I'm thankful that God has given to me a positive personality & outlook, and God has enabled me to be able to deal with pain well, too. Thank you for your kind remarks.
I have loved and meditated on the 2 Cor. verses many times. I kid some of my church friends---1 Cor. is for Sissy Christians and 2 Cor. is for Maturing Christians.
Yeah. God sends pleasure and pain---like a free trip to Hawaii and later near death experiences int he hospital for three weeks. I got closer to God in the hospital than I did in Hawaii.

Yes, those 2 Cor. verses are good ones. I think you are right on target about how we get closer to God in the tough times than we do when everything is going just "Hunky-dory"! I'm sure that is why God sends the tough times ... so we will be more involved with our Heavenly Dad!
In Him we put our hope and confidence . May your will be made . Yes , you already gave a beautiful testimony . I tried to do the same in the past . Would I be always strong enough. I wish I am, in remembering the anxiety of jesus in the garden of Getsemany.But we have to do our best.
Love
Michel
I appreciate your faith in Him as well, Michel.
. . .
You are a good friend to me.
...and thanks Carolyn for your indulgence for my "poems "
. . . and I truly do love to read your poems, stories, and to see your pictures!

I learn much from you. (I still wish I could hear you speak French. It is a beautiful language.)
Love,
Carolyn
We all have pity parties from time to time. I rarely have them...but when I do there are hats and balloons, etc., because if I'm gonna' have one I'm gonna do it right!
Having challenges like you shared in this post...your surgeries and not being able to return to the home and people you loved...it's no wonder you had a pity party.
But, you are a strong godly woman! And you learned what God wanted you to learn...that is evident in your beautiful poem!
If we can learn from the tough times...then nothing in our life is wasted.
(((HUGS)))
Thank you for your insights and kind words, Carolyn.
(((HUG)))
I agree ... in fact, I hope that I learn from the tough times so that God doesn't
need to extend the "learning time"!
I read and commented on the 4th - and I liked this then and now! I was hoping you'd post more poetry. This is very good! (Blank verse is hard to do - much harder than free verse)!!
Thank you for your encouragement. You seem to know so much about poetry!
Are you a teacher who specializes in poetry, or are you simply a self-taught, naturally gifted poet?
I didn't realize that this was called blank verse. I had to research to see the difference between the two.
I guess what I've been thinking that my poetry was "free" verse, when most of it is probably either blank verse or rhymed poetry.
I'm thinking about you today!
I hope you've had some time to play!
In between the chores and work
It's always fun to go berserk!
Berserk in a GOOD way, you know
Like playing with bubble blow
Or in the snow, or watching a fav TV show!
You're on my mind and I'm wishing you well!
Oh, and I hope you, also, get to sit and rest a spell!
HUGS!!!
Aw Carolyn ~
You made me smile,
This "poemphile"!
You're pretty neat,
And kinda sweet!
Thank you for your kindnesses:
The hugs, and lovely "blesses-es"!
Today has turned out pretty well,
And hearing from you - OH SO SWELL!
HUGS!!!
