Month: August 2013

  • The Last Two-and-1/2 Weeks . . .

Arranging for moving Mom closer to us!

Mom has lived in  the same independent living facility for most of the time since Dad's passing into Heaven one year ago this past January.  Our younger sister Ruth and a dear "adopted" sister Sharon have provided much of Mom's extra assistance as needed.  Ruth has moved out of the state to be with her husband, and Sharon has a grandson who has special needs, and even though we still have one sister and one niece with her family who live locally to Mom, my brother, husband, and our offspring and I have never had the privilege of having our parents live locally to us.   We prayed about this a lot, and God showed through many wonderful ways that this is the right move. We've been (& continue to be) very busy with all of the preparations for her move to Ohio  -- just about one month from now! And who knows, maybe we can get the rest of our family to move out this way, too!!

After research online by Ruth, my brother Don and I visited the top two contenders, we talked over the results each time with both Ruth and Mike, and then we narrowed it to the one which we feel is the right place for Mom. This past weekend, Mike and I took a 3-day round trip to IL to share with Mom that we were wanting her to join us in OH. We'd been very prayerful about each step, and especially as we were sharing with Mom about this next step in her life. She had always said that she didn't want to leave IL. I had prayed for Mom's heart to be prepared by God to be desirous of this change, and had asked others to pray the same likewise. When we shared with Mom, she was full of joy, relief, and excitement! Thank you everyone who helped to pray about this for us, and who are still praying as we continue to work through the process of making the arrangements for this big move for Mom.  (The flowers are some that was sent to Mom by all of her four children earlier in the week.

The pictures below are of ~ 1. The front of Mom's new home here in Springfield (from their website); 2. Brother Don standing just down the hall from Mom's new room, where he will be leading the moving crew to take Mom's things into her new apartment; and 3. the view outside Mom's window.

    Reuniting with an "old" friend!

Over the years of our marriage, Mike and I have opened our home to many special people: college students, couples from church who needed a place to stay, missionaries, family members, etc. God has blessed us immeasurably for this, and we have dear friends whom we haven't seen in many years.... but when we do reconnect with them, that is a very special time for us. And thanks to Facebook, we have reconnected with some of these friends and are able to keep up with them better. This last weekend while we were at Mom's for the weekend we received a voicemail from Scott, a former student who graced our home each Sunday afternoon. After our church service (where he served in various capacities), and then after a home-cooked meal, a nap or time of study and play with our sons, etc. he would go back to church in the evening, and then head back down to Cedarville College (from where I also had graduated). We looked after his then fiancee Julie during her senior year and his first year out of college away from her, and then our sons and Mike and I were privileged to have a part in their wedding at our church when she graduated with her BA in nursing from college.

Skip 25 years later from that last time that we saw them, and Scott is a widowed, senior pastor who has reared their seven girls since Julie's cancer took her Home to be with the Savior whom she served so faithfully. Scott met us at a local Bob Evans restaurant, and we shared pictures, stories, hugs, and breakfast this past week. Such a blessing!  He was back this way (from Idaho) to bring his second eldest daughter to Cedarville (now University, & MUCH LARGER) ... to become a nurse, too. We look forward to meeting her soon.

Keeping up with everyone ....  Family and Friends by E-mails, Facebook, Xanga, Phone, etc.

Basically, I am behind. You aren't forgotten, I've missed birthday greetings and more, but I am hoping to get in touch ..... just maybe behind a bit!  When I'm not doing the stuff mentioned above, I'm resting up for the next bout of stuff... but I have been enjoying some t.v. & reading, and some solo word games... and have slept much sounder of late. Please DON'T GIVE UP ON ME!!  I  SHALL BE IN TOUCH!! shy

In closing: Facebook swaps of our grandkids, and quotes from the books I'm currently reading:

Our oldest grandchild, Tristen began THIRD grade this week! Here she is in her new outfit all ready for her first day of school. The younger two are seen "holding hands" -- while Brogan is watching Disney, Jr. (according to his mom he held Baby Quinn's hand and stayed put like that for over 20 minutes, which is unheard of for this active guy except when he's sleeping). The last picture shows Brogan in his more usual active mode with his "best bud" Alivia, his next door neighbor. happy

From my reading of 199 Treasures of Wisdom on Talking with God -- (Quotes by Andrew Murray) ~ "I need daily, prayerful fellowship with God if I am to have His thoughts make their home in me."

From Spurgeon Gems ~ "(Christ) is no more a baby and He is no more dead! He sits on the Throne of God, reigning and ruling; and He will come the second time . . . the Living Christ is our hope! . . . 'Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.'" (Hebrews 7:25, KJV)

From Confucius Cat Says . . . , by P.R. Mason ~ "A closed mind is like a hooded litterbox with the door blocked. There's no way to use it effectively."

  • SCHOOL DAYS APPROACHING QUICKLY!

HAPPY #BIRTHDAY, TO MY NEWEST XANGA FRIEND, @carpe_diem99! She is a new teacher, and I'm impressed by her quickness, her creativity, and her care for her students!

It is nice to be able to encourage her, while not having to think about having to teach again myself! Many home-schooled students have already begun their new school year, and the public and private schools are getting ready to start up in another week or two, and so my retirement is starting to feel real now!  laughing

So what do I do now?

    1. I've tried out some new recipes -- several -- that I've gotten from Facebook, Xanga, Pinterest, the Food Channel, and other on-line sources. I'd never heard of Quinoa until watching "Chopped" -- and decided to try it out. I like it! Here it is with a stir-fried veggie, with pan-fried flounder.

I've also tried some other new recipes, but this was actually a new food for me.

    2. I have been enjoying getting together with folks as I mentioned in the last post. I've gotten together with my brother a couple of times, and he joined us for a Famous Recipe Chicken meal one of those times.

    3. Last night Mike and I attended a concert by one of the young women in our church. She teaches piano at a local university, and sings, writes music, and also plays flute. She also has a real heart for God and for the needs of youth. She and her brother, our worship minister at our church (seen at the piano, and also those are his children in the one picture) provided a benefit concert for a local youth ministry. It was a nice turnout, and a nice benefit to the group, too! We're so proud of her, and love her heart for the Lord and for others.

    3. This morning at church there was a "Ladies' Craft Day" ... which was simply an opportunity for whomever could do so, to come to the church and share a morning snack and some conversation while working on handwork, or playing a game, etc. It was enjoyable, and I worked a little on cross-stitch, a little on correspondence, and I played a game of Scrabble with one of the ladies there. ~~ Here is what I took to share with the ladies, minus a few. My family will be enjoying some sweets!

Well, that's it for this time. Have a great Sunday  . . .                                   and rest of the week, too!

  • A Special Day

Today I met a friend of mine whom I met about a year ago. Donna is from my brother's church. We met at Olive Garden, where she surprised me by treating me to the meal. After a couple of hours of talking there, we went to the Christian bookstore in town, and I treated her to some coffee, and we continued our conversation (and enjoyed some shopping time, too)! We had the gal who had made the coffee drink to take our picture. We found out that we had many things in common, one of which is loving to read. As we went through the checkout, we handed each other a gift -- we had each bought each other a book and a bookmark! The lady who had checked us out enjoyed our surprising of each other, too!

One of the things that we had in common was that of being "Adult-Third-Culture Kids." This was a new term/concept to her, but I have been aware of this, read up on it, and have been to a conference of ATCK's.  Here is one brief article if anyone is interested in learning more, but here is the introductory paragraph:" A Third Culture Kid (TCK) is a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside the parents' culture. The TCK frequently builds relationships to all of the cultures, while not having full ownership in any. Although elements from each culture may be assimilated into the TCK's life experience, the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of similar background."

Donna was a military kid, and I a missionary kid; she had been in two places outside of the U.S. (plus MANY places in the U.S.); I had 9-1/2 years in the Philippines, and the U.S. off and on in small amounts until I was 14. I also did my student teaching back in my other home. Here we are: happy  The rest are the latest pics I've "swiped" off of Facebook, of our grandkids. I can't get enough of them! I love the first one of Brogan with "attitude." Brogan is with his mom in the second picture -- you  can see from whom he got his blue eyes! Tristen is posing with her best friend. Quinn had those pictures taken yesterday (I believe) ... she is 8 weeks old now. Such a blessing to have grandchildren!!!

  • July - A Month of Busy, Lovely Times

                                         Where has the time gone?

On July 17, 1976, I married my best friend ~

my gift from God! Each year is more precious!

We took another trip to Illinois, and enjoyed treating Mom and my two sisters and a dear friend, Sharon who helps with Mom's care to an anniversary meal of pizza! It was a wonderful time together! Here is Mom with Mike and me on the night before we left, I think. Doesn't Mom look great? She has so many adjustments with which to deal daily, yet she continues to be a precious testament to God's enabling her to have the strength to meet those hurdles.

One benefit of being newly retired, is that I now have more time to visit family and friends. We saw our three grandchildren last month. Tristen Rose will be 9 in September, Brogan Glenn will be 3 in October, and Quinn Mae joined the family on June 10th. It was fun to see the kiddos all together, and to see the interactions of their Mommy & Daddy with them, too. Of course, being able to hug, hold, etc. the children was very special for us!

I didn't take pictures that day, but here are a few pictures of all three grandchildren

that I've gotten from my daughter-in-law's FB page (with her blessing). It is interesting

to see how quickly Quinn is growing,  just from these pictures!

The last picture is of Tristen earning yet another belt color: camo!

The last few pictures are of  friends with whom we have visited over the past week.

The first is with some of the first folks that we met here on Xanga when I first began blogging.

Steve and Cindy Hartman -------------------------------------   Kerry & Raquel Anderson & girls

The second is of a family from Brazil that our church supports in their ministry there.

The last few are candids of some of the others who were hosting the dinner party.

Our hosts, the Books are from our church. We went to college together, so I've known them a long time. The "guests" included their adult children & grandchildren, "adopted family" and those I've already mentioned.

My contribution was lumpia = Filipino egg rolls seen in the  first picture above.

The kids enjoyed playing with each other, the dogs, and the toys.

Mom sent me the link below via e-mail. As a lover of classical music, and as an individual with post-polio  (I had polio as a 3 year old child) I really enjoyed this video of the FLASH-WALTZ  immensely, and I identified with the little girl in the wheelchair.  ENJOY!

I am hoping to blog at least once a week now. See you soon ... on your sites.
